Mayor
Goran JesicBorn in Sremska Mitrovica on August 3, 1974.
Ješić finished his primary- and secondary-school education in Indjija. He graduated from the Department of Agriculture at the University of Novi Sad and is currently pursuing doctoral studies at the same university. He also completed a specialized course on public policy at the Department of Political Science at the University of Belgrade. He speaks English.
Ješić has been actively involved in politics since 1996 when he founded a municipal committee of the Citizens` Alliance of Serbia (GSS) in Indjija. He was one of the founders of the 1996-1997 student protest at the University of Novi Sad, as well as one of the initiators of the student movement Otpor in Vojvodina in 1999. In the period between 1996 and 2000, Ješić also worked on a number of NGO projects.
He was elected president of Indjija`s municipal GSS committee in 1997, whereas he was voted president of the Vojvodina GSS committee in 2000. During the election campaign of the Democratic Opposition of Serbia (DOS) in 2000, he coordinated DOS campaign activities in the municipalities of Indjija, Pećinci, Stara Pazova and Irig.
At local elections in September 2000, he was elected MP in the Indjija Municipal Assembly through direct vote. In the same year, he became the youngest mayor in Serbia. He was voted member of the GSS Main Board in May 2001, as well as member of the GSS Presidency a month later.
In 2004, Ješić won his second term as the mayor of Indjija, but this time through the first direct vote for mayors. At the same time, he was elected MP in the Vojvodina provincial assembly.
In 2006, he resigned his position of GSS vice president and quit his membership in the party. He became member of the Democratic Party (DS) and of its Main Board in October the same year. The cabinet of Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Božidar Đelić appointed him foreign investments advisor in September 2007. However, respecting the opinion of the Republican Committee on Conflict of Interest, he left this post two months later.
During his term as mayor, Ješić has improved municipal administration and introduced international standards in its functioning. He has also started and completed a great number of projects, such as increased participation of citizens in decision-making (in cooperation with OTI), reform of public communal companies (with DAI and USAID), and regional cooperation with the Tyrol province in Austria.
One of his most important accomplishments was System 48, i.e. introduction of e-government in the Municipality of Indjija (in cooperation with DAI). Other major achievements include improved local infrastructure, reconstructed schools, nurseries, construction of the local cultural center, building of industrial zones, and many other projects.
During his nine-year mandate, Ješić has managed to attract a large number of domestic and foreign investors and has thus considerably curbed the unemployment rate in Indjija. About 300 million euros in greenfield investments have flowed into Indjija in this period, which amounts to the greatest percentage of direct investments per capita in Serbia.
Thanks to Ješić`s involvement in cooperation with Novi Sad-based association Exit, one of the world’s most popular rock bands, Red Hot Chili Peppers, held their first concert in Southeastern Europe in Indjija, in front of more than 100,000 people.
Ješić is married to Ružica. They have son Marko and daughter Mina.
