Indjija Indjija is a town in the Srem region located on the southern slopes of Fruska Gora Mountain, half way between Belgrade and Novi Sad – on the place where the two most important European corridors intersect: Corridor 10 (highway E-75) and Corridor 7 (the River Danube). The Municipality of Indjija covers an area of 385 km², and consists of 11 settlements. Indjija is located at 45º03’ north latitude and 20º05’ east longitude, at 113m above sea level.
The municipality’s relief is characterized by slopes of Fruska Gora Mountain in the north part and fertile plain in the south part of the territory. The region has a moderate continental climate. The coldest month is January with average temperature of -1ºC, and the warmest are July and August with average temperature of 22ºC.
Indjija has 52,750 residents and a population density of 130/m2. It has a very diverse population comprised of Serbs, Croats, Hungarians, Slovaks, Ukrainians, Roma, Macedonians, Rusins, Russians, Bosniaks, Bulgarians, Czechs and others.
The first mention of Indjija dates back to 1455. According to a description from 1746 the settlement had 60 households, while in 1791 it had already grown to 122 households with 1,054 residents.
Germans and Czechs started to settle in Indjija at the beginning of the 19th century, while Hungarians migrated there towards the end of the century. Prior to the World War II, 5,900 of the total population of 7,800 were comprised of ethnic Germans. The town was at the time one of the most developed settlements in Vojvodina, and a spiritual and cultural center of Germans in the Srem region. In the post war period, Indjija developed into a strong economic center of this part of Srem, which it is still today.
Numerous cultural and historical monuments, dating from the pre-historic period up to now, are a testimony of the rich past of Indjija. The remains of the Roman Empire fortresses in Stari Slankamen and Cortanovci, medieval castles in Stari Slankamen and monument of the Slankamen battle shows the strategic importance of this area on the Danube River which, throughout the history, has always represented a border.
The Danube River flows through the territory of the municipality in length of 30 km, cutting to the ends of Fruska Gora and creating a magnificent shore line, one of the most beautiful in the flow of the Danube River. Fertile soil and sunny sides of the Fruska Gora have made the municipality a place with developed fruit harvesting and wine yard fields.
